BACKGROUND

Gaston County is committed to environmental preservation through the establishment of viable and economical recycling programs in which all County residents are provided an opportunity to participate. Gaston County and the City of Gastonia are discussing opportunities to combine efforts and achieve cost savings and/or greater efficiency. During the fall of 2020 the City of Gastonia discontinued their curbside recycling program due to high levels of contamination and intermittent participation. Since that time the City has reached out to Gaston County to discuss the possibility of operating a second recycling center in the City limits. Beginning in 2001, the City and County have collaborated on the operations of the Farmer’s Market Recycling Center. The new agreement calls for the expansion of these efforts through the operation of a new Duke Street Recycling Center.  Approval of this Board Action authorizes the County Attorney to draft necessary contract documents, and the County Manager or designee, to sign said documents for contract related purposes.
