Increase funding for Dallas Park improvements
BACKGROUND
Gaston County Parks and Recreation maintains and manages a system of 18 parks including the Dallas Park. The 90-acre Dallas Park was constructed in the 1970s with the assistance of two Land Water Conservation Fund grants. The park includes baseball/softball fields, equestrian facilities, fishing lakes and piers, picnic shelters, tennis courts, and a historic village. The Dallas Park is well used and maintained but many of the park facilities do not meet ADA guidelines and/or are in great need of updates. The Land Water Conservation Fund Grants this year are purposely designated for parks that were constructed with Land Water Conservation Funds and are in need of updates. Gaston County Parks and Recreation requests the Board of Commissioners to authorize the submission of a 2020 Land Water Conservation Fund Grant in the amount of $160,276. If approved, the grant will be matched by County funds budgeted for ADA and Dallas Park Improvements. Grant funds will be used to provide a fully inclusive playground and an accessible restroom on the eastern side of the Dallas Park. The proposed playground would serve all children and it will be the first inclusive playground in the Gaston County Park system. The proposed accessible restroom facility will be located in an area of the park that does not currently have a restroom.
