BACKGROUND
This award provides on-going services through the specialized Domestic Violence Unit (2 DV Deputies and 2 Court Advocates) and their goals of providing consistent, integrated, comprehensive services to victims of domestic violence. Between October 2018 and September 2019, the Sheriff’s Office DV Unit served 1,126 DV related protection orders and served 486 DV related charges stemming from assault and harassment. The Court Advocates accompanied 759 survivors to court and assisted with over 686 ex-parte orders during the same period. The Sheriff’s Office DV Unit remains a vital link in combating domestic violence in Gaston County by serving as the primary agency responsible for servicing all domestic violence-related warrants and summons in each jurisdiction through an MOU with 10 municipal law enforcement agencies. The 25% in-kind match will be met through a portion of the Court Advocate’s salary and benefits (group insurance). The Court Advocate’s salary is already included in the Sheriff’s Budget and is paid through Civil Service Processing Fees.
