BACKGROUND
The Sheriff’s Office requests the purchase of three additional K-9s for the detection of explosives and narcotics in the jail. Presently, the Sheriff’s Office has one K-9 trained in explosives. The purchase consists of two K-9s trained in narcotics and one in explosives. The addition of these K-9s is critical. Jail staff are finding increased numbers of inmates receiving mail laced with Suboxone (narcotic) strips, drugs found during shakedowns, and situations where drugs have been left around the premises. In addition to the K-9s, funding for a K-9 vehicle and accessories (vehicle kennel insert, painting, radio and siren) is needed to ensure the K-9 Unit is fully operational. With the opioid epidemic reaching an all-time high, jails across the country are dealing with an increased number of inmates addicted to drugs - Gaston County is no exception. This purchase would allow the Sheriff’s Office to adequately combat the crisis.
