BACKGROUND

The Gaston County Police Department requested funds from the asset forfeiture accounts for the purpose of purchasing body worn cameras.  Cameras were received by the department on June 22, 2017.  The addition of body cameras for Gaston County Police officers will put us in a position to offer more transparency and provide information on incidents much quicker.  In addition, the use of body cameras has been shown in some studies to decrease the use of force incidents faced by police and the number of complaints filed by citizens.  The additional potential benefits could be reduced court costs, increased convictions, better evidence, and reduced time spent investigating complaints.  Overall, the performance of both the officers and the public will be more professional.  Please accept this reimbursement in the amount of $99,925.26 from the North Carolina Department of Public Safety Governor’s Crime Commission.
