BACKGROUND

Gaston County has not had an update to its Social Media Policy since June 26, 2012, when some of the most commonly used social media platforms were still in their infancy. The Gaston County Communications Office researched social media policies at other local governments, consulted with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s School of Government, and worked with the County Attorney’s Office to create a more robust policy that better protects the County and provides better guidelines for how employees will utilize social media when acting on behalf of the County. This new Social Media Policy replaces, in its entirety, the existing Social Media Policy in the Gaston County Personnel Policy.
