BACKGROUND

The Environmental Health division of Gaston County Public Health is requesting to transfer funds from the general fund (1000) to the capital fund (4005) to purchase a Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) system for the Onsite Wastewater program to assist in locating septic systems. Onsite Wastewater’s current practice of locating septic systems requires personnel to use a metal probe rod in the field. When accurate septic records (drawings) are not available (this is common for older systems) this method becomes labor-intensive, time-consuming, and highly dependent on repeated ground probing. Frequent probing is physically demanding and can increase the likelihood of injury, especially during dry summer conditions when soil is harder. Utilizing a ground-penetrating radar unit will improve the efficiency and accuracy of septic system location, particularly for systems that are difficult to identify using traditional methods. The GPR unit will be available for all onsite wastewater staff to utilize, supporting consistent field operations while reducing the need for extensive manual probing.
