BACKGROUND

The Gaston County Police Department requests that Larco, a nine (9) year old Malinois K-9 be declared as surplus and removed from Gaston County’s inventory.  K-9 Larco is failing to perform his duties as a member of the K-9 team in handler protection, building searches, criminal apprehension, narcotics detection, and tracking.  K-9 Larco has been examined and treated for reoccurring health issues by a veterinarian licensed by the state of North Carolina.  It is recommended that K-9 Larco be retired at this point due to the safety of the K-9 and its handler.
