BACKGROUND
Transportation infrastructure is a critical component of any local economic development program. The Gaston County Board of Commissioners has studied the “Pennies for Progress” program in York County, South Carolina and finds that it is a successful method for raising revenues to support transportation and has been strongly supported by the voters of York County, SC.
The Gaston County Board of Commissioners requests the General Assembly to introduce and support legislation allowing citizens the opportunity to vote for a local option sales tax to fund transportation infrastructure.
At the 2/9/2016 Regular Meeting, the BOC amended the request as follows:
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Legislative request will be extended annually on the legislative agenda until a local bill is approved or the Board of Commissioners votes to remove the request.
