BACKGROUND

The jail population for November and December 2019 exceeded operational capacity (526) daily. As a result, inmates were shipped to the following counties: Hoke, Madison, and Sampson. Inmates were housed between 2-30 days. The total cost for November is $26,645 and $4,715 (est.) for December. The population started to decrease in December which allowed all inmates to be brought back December 7^th. The Sheriff’s Office does not have funds allocated for this expense. Although the population has started to decrease, it is possible additional inmates will have to be shipped until the jail expansion is operational this year.
