BACKGROUND

The Gaston County Department of Health and Human Services received funds from the North Carolina Department of Justice as a result of a class action lawsuit filed by the NC Department of Justice against Stericycle.  Stericycle is a medical waste disposal company and is responsible for contractual disposing of the clinical medical waste at Hudson Main, Highland Health Center, and Summit Midwifery.  The related lawsuit alleged that Stericycle systematically and improperly increased prices for its medical waste disposal services, resulting in the overcharging of educational institutions, governmental agencies, and other public entities throughout the country until mid-2014.  Gaston County Health Department was among those impacted by the overcharges and refunds are due to the Health Department.  These funds will be used to offset Stericycle costs for the FY18 budget year.  These are Non-County funds.
