BACKGROUND

Safe Place Exchange will allow the supervised transfer of children from a parent or caregiver to the other parent immediately before and after an unsupervised visit. Currently, approximately 90-100 custody exchanges for DV victims are occurring in public locations across the county. They are neither facilitated nor monitored by any law enforcement agency, and in most instances there is no surveillance equipment present. These unsupervised exchanges have the potential to erupt into verbal abuse or even physical violence. This project will provide a designated safe exchange location monitored by surveillance cameras, an emergency call box and oversight by a Sheriff's Deputy in order to maximize safety and minimize the potential for conflict. Exchange referrals will come from judges, the courts, and local attorneys.
