BACKGROUND

The Gaston County Police Department has a nine year-old male German Shepherd K9 by the name of Mack that is failing to perform his duties as a member of the K9 team in handler protection, building searches, criminal apprehension, narcotics detection, and tracking due to age.  K9 Mack has been examined and treated by a veterinarian licensed by the state of North Carolina.  Captain J. R. Phelps, K9 Unit Commander, advises that he feels the safety of the K9 and its handler is becoming an issue.  Captain Phelps recommends K9 Mack be retired at this point.
