Increase funding for Poston Park improvements.
BACKGROUND
George Poston Park is a 350-acre County park which opened to the public in 2001. The first phase of construction at the park included athletic fields, a horseshoe complex, playground, and restroom/concession buildings. Additional Poston Park construction projects included a dog park, 12 miles of biking/hiking trails, a fishing lake, picnic shelters, fishing pier, paved walking trails, and volleyball court. In 2018, the County opened an asphalt pumptrack at Poston Park. The pumptrack is a unique and very popular attraction for local families as well as visitors from all over NC and surrounding states. Gaston County Travel and Tourism and Parks and Recreation hosted a Red Bull Qualifier event at the pumptrack in 2019 and another Red Bull Qualifier event is scheduled at the pumptrack on September 28. The George R. Poston Fund is administered by the Gaston County Community Foundation. The Fund was established to assist with improvement projects at Poston Park. All projects must be approved by the Community Foundation Board of Directors. These funds, combined with funding from Travel and Tourism, will be used to provide lighting at the Poston Park Pumptrack. Lighting the pumptrack will provide additional time for pumptrack users to enjoy the track. Additionally, lighting at the pumptrack will be very beneficial for special events such as the Red Bull Qualifier.
