BACKGROUND

Gaston County, the Catawba Lands Conservancy, The Conservation Fund, and Duke Ventures Real Estate are partnering to preserve the 557-acre Catawba Cove Property which lies along the headwaters of Lake Wylie in the southeastern portion of Gaston County.  The partners wish to preserve the character, aesthetic quality, and ecological integrity of the property while providing a public recreation area available to the citizens of Gaston County.  This property will provide a unique opportunity for Gaston County residents to enjoy the outdoors and is consistent with Gaston County’s Strategic Plan. A portion of the property will require an additional conservation easement that must be recorded upon closing for preservation purposes.  This easement is a condition of a North Carolina Land and Water Fund grant previously approved for the project.  A final draft of the conservation easement is attached to this Board Action.  The remaining portions of the site are either already encumbered by conservation easements, or are unencumbered for access, parking and maintenance purposes.  This Board Action approves the conservation easement terms and conditions, authorizes the County Attorney to finalize said documents and make any final non-material changes, and authorizes the County Manager or her designee to execute said documents for recording purposes.  No additional appropriations are necessary as a result of this Board Action.
