BACKGROUND
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) is an agency within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services that leads federal efforts to improve behavioral health and reduce the impact of substance use and mental health conditions. SAMHSA provides funding to communities to expand access to treatment, recovery, and other behavioral health services.
Gaston County has been awarded $1,995,573 from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), through the Grants to Expand Substance Use Disorder Treatment Capacity in Adult and Family Treatment Drug Courts program. The funding will support the Gaston Treatment Court System (GTCS), which includes the Gaston Adult Treatment Court (ATC) and Gaston Veterans Treatment Court (VTC). The Adult Treatment Court was established in 2022, followed by the Veterans Treatment Court in 2023, providing alternatives to incarceration for individuals whose substance use and related needs are contributing to their involvement in the criminal justice system.
