BACKGROUND

The Sheriff’s Office has exceeded its off-site medical budget ($175,000) in Q1 of FY 2023 for inmates housed at the Gaston County Jail. Expenditures to date total $287,687.79 with the majority expended in July 2022. There were two major hospitalizations that occurred late FY 2022, which resulted in billing and payment in FY 2023. Additionally, there has been an increase in medical, overdoses, and trauma cases that resulted in hospital stays.

The identified cost drivers remain substance abuse and chronic illness. It is estimated the Sheriff’s Office will need approximately $480,000 for off-site medical costs for the remainder of FY 2023.
