BACKGROUND

The North Carolina Governor’s Crime Commission administers the state's federal block grants related to domestic violence victims’ services.

The Gaston County Sheriff’s Office has been awarded $200,000 or 75% of the costs over two years to continue the Domestic Violence Unit, which includes salary and benefits funding for two Domestic Violence Deputies. The Domestic Violence Deputies will be the main points of contact in the office for all domestic violence related matters and will be stationed at the Sheriff’s Office. Their schedules will coincide with the Courts issuance of 50-B orders. This project will reduce service time, victim stress, and will free up other Road Deputies to address backlogs in other areas.

The Court Advocate position will provide the two-year, 25% in-kind match of $66,666.  Her salary is funded through Civil Penalty Processing fee revenues. She helps victims of domestic violence in the completion of paperwork and in taking the necessary steps to gain temporary and permanent protective orders. If grant funds are no longer available for the Domestic Violence Deputies, their positions would be sustained through the Sheriff’s Office Civil Processing Fees.
