BACKGROUND
The Gaston County Solid Waste and Recycling Division is committed to providing services in the most economical and efficient manner that comply with all local, state, and federal guidelines. The Renewable Energy Center is an integral part of that effort through converting harmful methane gas into electricity that is sold on the local power grid.
The Renewable Energy Center utilizes three (3) Jenbacher GE 420 landfill gas engines. The manufacturer estimated life expectancy for these generators is 60,000 hours. The diligence of our power plant operators and their commitment to preventive maintenance have allowed our facility to get maximum hours out of our engines. The facility currently has one engine that is at 59,336 operating hours. Replacement engines now take between 8-12 months for delivery. Landfill staff needs to start the procurement process for the replacement engine block now to limit any potential downtime. Due to Jenbacher being the only manufacturer of this specific engine, this will require a sole source purchase from Innio Jenbacher North America, LLC who is the sole authorized Jenbacher distributor for our territory.
Approval of this Board Action authorizes staff to move forward with a sole source purchase of the necessary engine block from Innio Jenbacher North America, LLC, approves the necessary transfer of funds into the appropriate expenditure account per the attached Budget Change Request, and authorizes the County Manager, or her designee, to execute the necessary contra...
