BACKGROUND
The Gaston County Solid Waste and Recycling Division remains committed to improving recycling services across Gaston County. In support of this goal, the Solid Waste and Recycling Division recently applied for and has been awarded a Recycling Expansion for E-Waste Grant from the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (NCDEQ). This grant will support efforts to reduce the volume of electronic waste (e-waste) being landfilled. Currently, e-waste collected at five Gaston County convenience sites is placed in shared containers alongside tires. This practice often results in broken electronics, which are no longer recyclable, and also creates safety hazards for landfill staff. To address these issues, grant funds will be used to purchase lockable trailers dedicated solely to the collection of e-waste. These trailers will be stationed at convenience sites throughout Gaston County and will include new, clearly visible signage to improve public awareness and proper disposal practices. The purchase of the trailers would be paid through available Solid Waste Enterprise Funds. Approval of this Board Action officially accepts the Recycling Expansion for Gaston County E-Waste grant and the attached Budget Change Request and authorizes the County Manager, or his designee, to execute the grant.
