BACKGROUND

The Budget Department has been awarded the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award by the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) for its FY 2026 Adopted Budget document. The award represents a significant achievement by Gaston County. It reflects the commitment of the governing body and staff to meet the highest principles of governmental budgeting. To receive the budget award, Gaston County had to satisfy nationally recognized guidelines for effective budget presentation. These guidelines are designed to assess how well an entity's budget serves as a:

•                     Policy document

•                     Financial plan

•                     Operations guide

•                     Communications device

 

Budget documents must be rated "proficient" in all four categories, and in the fourteen mandatory criteria within those categories, to receive the award. In addition, Gaston County’s budget document received special recognition for its long-range operating financial plans and strategic goals & strategies for the 2nd year in a row. Special recognition is given when all three reviewers give the highest possible score in particular categories.
