BACKGROUND
The Catawba Crossings project is a proposed new location roadway running from NC 279 (S. New Hope Road) in southern Gaston County crossing both the South Fork of the Catawba and Catawba Rivers and connecting to I-485 in Mecklenburg County. It is a top priority roadway project for the City, County and Region and should be appropriately ranked and prioritized as a SPOT 5.0 or P5 project at the Statewide or Regional Tier.
Both the Gaston Cleveland Lincoln Metropolitan Planning Organization (GCLMPO) and the Charlotte Regional Transportation Planning Organization (CRTPO) lists the Catawba Crossings Project in their respective long range Metropolitan Transportation Plans.
The GCLMPO Board has adopted a Resolution of Support for the project and the Charlotte City Council is considering a rezoning petition on November 21, 2016 for the River District development that will bring an additional 8 million square feet of office space, 500,000 square feet of retail, 1,000 new hotel rooms and 4,650 residential units.
Gaston County Board of Commissioners fully supports the Catawba Crossings project, the enhanced east-west connectivity and the connectivity provided in the proposed River District development rezoning request brought before Charlotte City Council.
