BACKGROUND
A combined single-county Community Child Protection and Child Fatality Prevention Team was established by the Gaston County Board of County Commissioners in 1996 (Resolution 1996-311). In 2017 (Resolution 2017-045), the Gaston County Board of County Commissioners dissolved the combined Community Child Protection Team/Child Fatality Prevention Team (CCPT/CFPT) and established each team (CCPT and CFPT) as a separate committee in the County Appointment Records and realigned team duties in accordance with NCGS ?7B-1407.
The 2023 Appropriations Act [Section 9H.15. of Session Law 2023-134] enacted changes to strengthen the state's child fatality prevention system. The new legislation generally addresses recommendations that were made by the North Carolina Child Fatality Task Force with the goal of strengthening the state's child fatality prevention system.
Changes to Local Teams will become effective in January 2025. As of July 2025, Local Teams will be required to use the National Fatality Review - Case Reporting System (NFR-CRS).
To ensure compliance, County Commissioners must determine if the new Local Team (combined CCPT and CFPT) will be established as a single or multi-county team.
