BACKGROUND
The Gaston County Solid Waste and Recycling Division remains committed to improving recycling services across Gaston County. In support of this goal, the Solid Waste and Recycling Division recently applied for and has been awarded a Lithium Battery Storage Improvements Grant from the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (NCDEQ). The grant will fund the purchase of specialized containers designed to safely store lithium batteries, which are known fire hazards. A large container will be placed at the landfill, with additional containers located at convenience sites that currently accept batteries and at the main branch library to improve public access. Each location will also receive updated signage. Collected batteries will be stored in these containers until each Household Hazardous Waste event, where they will be transported for proper disposal. The purchase of the containers will be supported through available Solid Waste Enterprise Funds. Approval of this Board Action formally accepts the Lithium Battery Storage Improvements Grant, approves the attached Budget Change Request, and authorizes the County Manager, or his designee, to execute the grant.
