BACKGROUND
Due to the overcrowding issue and age of the Gaston County Jail, a jail expansion study was performed by Stewart - Cooper - Newell Architects of Gastonia, NC to determine current and future needs of the jail. The Sheriff’s Office has prioritized jail capital projects as outlined in the study (pg. 1-3 #8) that require implementation prior to the jail expansion. The estimated cost of these projects is $654,000. This estimate is not a replacement for competitive bids that must be secured.
With this Board Action, the Sheriff’s Office seeks approval from the Board as to which capital projects can be implemented prior to the jail expansion and a timeframe for when the projects can commence.
At the 11/14/2017 Regular Meeting, the Board of Commissioners, by unanimous consent, increased the Body Scanner appropriation to $189,000 / 5-Year Warranty and Authorized the Implementation of Gaston County Jail Capital Needs Projects to Commence Prior to Jail Expansion Project AS AMENDED - Project Estimate of $674,000.
The Finance Director shall make the appropriate amendment to the Budget Change Request to reflect the amended appropriation.
