BACKGROUND

On May 24, 2022 the Gaston County Board of Commissioners voted to eliminate pay parking at the Gaston County Courthouse (Resolution #2022-146). The Courthouse parking lot consists of 247 total parking spaces. There are currently 198 available parking spaces that are not reserved. The reserved parking spaces consist of 20 handicap, 17 for elected officials, and 12 for various law enforcement vehicles.

Public Works proposes the following reserved spaces:

-14 reserved spaces for jurors in the upper level of the parking lot near the Courthouse;

-32 reserved permitted spaces to be purchased by Courthouse staff through a lottery process. The revenue from these spaces would approximately cover the salary of the Parking Attendant. The cost of one (1) of these permitted, reserved spaces will be $100 per month ($1,200 annually).

To ensure that spaces are available for the public, no employees other than those in purchased permitted spaces should park in the lot adjacent to the courthouse. Staff will post signage directing citizens and employees to the free parking lot at Walnut St. below the Annex. Citations will be written for employees or citizens that park in reserved spaces, and for other violations of the parking ordinance.
