BACKGROUND

The North Carolina General Assembly voted on December 11, 2024, to override the Governor’s veto of Session law 2024-57, now Senate Bill 382, titled ‘Disaster Relief-3/Budget/Various Law Changes’. This Bill changes the timeline of full implementation of child fatality prevention system changes. The new child fatality prevention system legislation goes into effect July 1, 2025.

Gaston County's Child Fatality Prevention (CFPT) and Community Child Protection Teams (CCPT) will continue to exist and operate as they have for another 6 months. Creation of Gaston County’s single County Team will not go into effect until July 1, 2025. CCPT and CFPT will continue to review all child fatalities until July 1, 2025, when the new mandatory categories of death for review will go into effect. The standard CFPT report form will continue to be utilized.
