BACKGROUND
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) is an agency within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services that leads federal efforts to improve behavioral health and reduce the impact of substance use and mental health conditions. SAMHSA provides funding to communities to expand access to treatment, recovery, and other behavioral health services.
Gaston County has been awarded $1,995,573 from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), through the Grants to Expand Substance Use Disorder Treatment Capacity in Adult and Family Treatment Drug Courts program. The funding will support the Gaston Treatment Court System (GTCS), which includes the Gaston Adult Treatment Court (ATC) and Gaston Veterans Treatment Court (VTC). The Adult Treatment Court was established in 2022, followed by the Veterans Treatment Court in 2023, providing alternatives to incarceration for individuals whose substance use and related needs are contributing to their involvement in the criminal justice system.
The grant will allow the Treatment Court System to expand services for individuals with substance use disorders and co-occurring conditions. Funding will provide additional case management, peer support, mentoring, treatment, trauma-focused services, medication-assisted treatment, and connections to community recovery resources.
The project will also strengthen the overall Treatment Court System by improving coordination among the courts, treatment providers, and community partners; increasing access to evidence-based treatment and recovery services; and establishing consistent evaluation and fidelity monitoring. These efforts are intended to improve treatment and recovery outcomes and help reduce recidivism among participants.
The total award includes $395,573 for Year 1 and $400,000 annually for Years 2 through 5, with no match required. The project period is October 1, 2026, through September 30, 2030, and year 1 budget period is October 1, 2026 through September 30, 2027.
